The tutorial module serves as a small-class adjunct to the lecture modules for the Diploma in the History of European Painting. It is intended that these classes reinforce and augment the material covered in lectures. Initially, the module examines the fundamental language of, and approaches to Art History. Subsequently, through class discussion directed to reinforce and expand upon topics covered in lectures, the tutorials are intended to facilitate a deeper understanding of Western art from late Antiquity to the Middle Ages.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- Understand and discuss the fundamentals of the pictorial language, subject matter and approaches to Art History.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the general timeline, and recognise and discuss the main stylistic developments in the history of Western painting from late Antiquity to the late Middle Ages.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the broader cultural & historical background to the artworks and principal artistic developments.

The Maestà’s of Duccio & Simone Martini
Ambrogio Lorenzetti at the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena
The S. Trinità, Rucellai & Ognissanti Madonnas
