European painting of the 15th century and the concept of the Renaissance as a period of revival and transformation in Western culture is examined in this module. The work of the van Eycks, Memling, Fouquet, Masaccio, Botticelli & the Bellini among others will be discussed in the context of the Renaissance with its interest in fidelity to nature in art; re-examination of the texts, learning & art of the Classical past; developments in society with respect to individual & civic identity, & the allied revolution in the practice, status & patronage of art.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the general timeline, and recognise and examine the main stylistic developments European painting from circa 1400 to circa 1520.
- Identify & contextualise the works of key practitioners and their significance within the artist's career or school.
- Recognise and distinguish between the chief points of common ground and difference in 15th-century art in Italy and the Low Countries.
- Place significant works of art from the period in their cultural, religious and social context.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is taught via lectures and an additional class in the form of a field trip to the National Gallery of Ireland which will give students the opportunity to look at artworks in the original and to discuss ideas that have been raised in the lectures.
Support material will be available on Brightspace but students are encouraged to visit the library in person, make use of recommended texts, read books, visit galleries and museums and contribute in class.
