Stepping outside chronological & stylistic parameters this module aims to extend the understanding and appreciation of the history of European painting.
In this module the working methods & fundamental techniques involved in the production of a work of art are examined. Focussing on painting, though also considering sculpture, it will explore a variety of media used by artists, and will also give some consideration to developments in terms of artists' status & working practice.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- Understand and apply the basic terminology relevant to painting techniques
- Identify correctly the different media used in painting.
- Describe the materials and processes involved in the main painting techniques.
- Discuss the history and use of the main painting techniques in the broader framework of European painting from Late Antiquity to the 19th century.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is taught via lectures and an additional class in the form of a field trip to the National Gallery of Ireland which will give students the opportunity to look at artworks in the original and to discuss ideas that have been raised in the lectures.
Support material will be available on Brightspace but students are encouraged to visit the library in person, make use of recommended texts, read books, visit galleries and museums and contribute in class.
