This is the first of two modules addressing the topics of pictorial language, subject matter & technique. Stepping outside chronological & stylistic parameters it aims to extend the understanding and appreciation of the history of European painting. The language of pictorial construction, including composition, line, volume, colour & perspective is explored through the in-depth study of specific examples. The issue of subject matter & meaning is examined with a particular focus on the language of attributes, signs & symbols used to identify & interpret art works.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this MODULE students should be able to:
- Understand and apply the basic terminology relevant to a painting.
- Utilise the basic art historical language to describe, analyse & interpret an artwork.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the main subjects types & their relative histories.
- Possess an understanding of the language of attributes, signs & symbols in art, & identify key figure types, be they religious, historical, classical, mythological or allegorical

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is taught via lectures and an additional class in the form of a field trip to the National Gallery of Ireland which will give students the opportunity to look at artworks in the original and to discuss ideas that have been raised in the lectures.
Support material will be available on Brightspace but students are encouraged to visit the library in person, make use of recommended texts, read books, visit galleries and museums and contribute in class.
