The focus of the module is on providing students with a working knowledge of techniques and principles of farm business financial analysis, planning and strategic decision-making. The module content includes: operational and strategic principles of farm business management; preparation and analysis of basic farm management accounts; application of farm planning techniques: enterprise, partial and whole farm budgets; farm financial control and cash flow budgeting; assessment and management of risk in farm decision-making.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

The module aims to enable students to apply management theory and techniques to address farm decision problems. On successful completion of the module students should be able to: describe the rationale for and process of development of a farm business strategy; prepare and analyse basic farm management accounts; apply key farm planning techniques (partial budgets, whole farm budgets); describe procedures for farm budgetary control; analyse and evaluate management strategies to control risk in farm management decision making.

This module will involve a mixture of active/task-based learning together with lectures and tutorials, delivered in a blended approach.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

An introductory module in Business Management such as AERD20030 or equivalent.

Learning Recommendations:

Students should have a sound basic understanding of livestock and crop production enterprises common to Irish farms. In particular, this should include knowledge of popular terminolgy relating to farm production enterprises.
