The aim of this module is to provide students with practical exposure to working in industry during which they can apply domain knowledge gained during their studies in UCD. Students will work in a setting that reflects their interests as a data-science professional. Relevant sectors include Software Development, Data Science, Fintech, Consultancy, and the Public Sector. Students will experience workplace culture making them more effective employee following graduation.

The exact nature of the work that students will undertake will vary according to the nature of the organizations that they join, however, the student will be expected to take a full part in the activities of the organization that they join and to make positive contributions to that organization. In contrast with routine work, an internship is defined as a learning experience incorporating mentoring, and professional supervision in which work is viewed from critical and evaluative perspectives. Assessment in the module is designed to promote this learning experience. The module is graded in a pass/fail grade neutral fashion and so has no impact on final GPA calculation.

Academic research based internships (e.g. working for a PI within UCD) are generally not permitted. There is an expectation that internships will be paid work experience positions. Self-sourced internship positions require prior-approval from the academic module co-ordinator.
