This module is a module in applied tax. It deals with the construction of tax legislation and case law.

The module will provide participants with a unique insight into how Ireland’s corporation tax system works, the pivotal role Ireland’s tax strategy plays in shaping our economic policy and the key tax strategy choices facing Irish policy makers and employers.

Students will learn how to perform tax research and how to communicate their research findings to a client and to the Revenue Commissioners. Students will also learn how to identify tax issues in both financial statements and in management accounts.

On successful completion of the module, participants will be in a position to apply for an exemption from the Business Taxes examination, one of the four exams at Part II of the three-part AITI, Chartered Tax Adviser qualification. In addition, exemptions may be sought from Chartered Accountants Ireland regarding the Chartered Tax Consultant qualification.

Students must attempt all the assessment components of a module.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:1.Understand the construction of tax legislation and tax law. 2.Apply research methods in addressing tax planning and tax compliance. 3.Write a report/letter to clients and the Revenue in a professional manner. 4. Apply professional obligations and ethical values in advising clients on tax planning and tax compliance issues. 5.Account for Deferred Tax. 6.Understand the interaction between tax and International Financial Reporting Standards and how to identify tax matters in both financial statements and in management accounts. 7.Obtain an exemption from the Irish Tax Institute `Chartered Tax Adviser' qualification, for the Part II 'Business Taxes' examination.

Indicative Module Content:

This module is a module in applied tax regarding business taxes. It deals with the construction of tax legislation and tax law in addition to providing participants with a unique insight into how Ireland’s corporation tax system works, the pivotal role Ireland’s tax strategy plays in shaping our economic policy and the key tax strategy choices facing Irish policy makers and employers.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Lectures

Lectures will be followed by an interactive session on the tax legislation relating to the AITI Part II Business Taxes paper, using the Direct Tax Acts.

Case study workshops will take place during the afternoons, where students will work within teams on the AITI Part II Business Taxes past exam papers related to the morning topic/s. Students will then present their own solutions to these questions to the class at the end of each day.
