The aim of the programme is to equip maternity care staff with the necessary knowledge and related skills to provide critical maternity care.
The programme is offered on a part-time basis over one calendar year. The first trimester concentrates on theory and focuses on the conditions that give rise to critical illness, rapid deterioration and emergencies during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, inclusive of underlying related pathophysiology. The second trimester focuses on clinical skill acquisition in the clinical skills laboratory. The programme content is aimed at providing a strong theoretical and practical grounding that will enable practitioners to develop an analytical approach to clinical decision-making.
Our teaching methods offer the best of both worlds, face to face interactive and online learning thereby reducing the amount of contact time required on campus. The design of the programme combines the convenience and flexibility of online learning to facilitate the needs of busy working professionals. Clinical skills are taught in small group settings.
The programme will afford students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills when caring for critically ill women. Students will also enhance their knowledge and skills for meeting the ongoing care needs of women in contemporary maternity care.
