ME Manufacturing Eng w Data Science & AI Competitive Man FT (T383)

This Master's merges manufacturing technical and technological aspects with innovation and entrepreneurship teaching, in the context of global societal challenges, such as circular economy, industrial innovation and sustainability. It is a double degree programme, coordinated by EIT Manufacturing Master School, between UCD and other universities around Europe i.e. Aalto University, Finland, Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN), France, Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), Italy, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Italian Switzerland (SUPSI), Switzerland, Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP), France, University of Trento (UNITN), Italy and Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria. The first year is spent at UCD (entry university) and the second year is spent at another (exit) university as listed above. Students choose one of four majors offered as part of the programme i.e. Additive manufacturing for Full Flexibility, Zero-Defect Manufacturing for a Circular Economy, Platforms for digitalized value networks and Data Science and AI for Competitive Manufacturing.

See the EIT Manufacturing Master School Website for further details.

This is an EIT Labelled programme

In addition to the two National Accredited degrees, the students receive the EIT Label Certificate, documenting the EIT accreditation and high quality of the programme.

This EIT-Manufacturing Masters programme (UCD ME Manufacturing) aspires to be Europe’s pre-eminent taught programme for graduates seeking to pursue careers in the manufacturing industry.  The unique factors that this programme offers to all students include (i) direct involvement of industry, (ii) hands-on experiential learning through Teaching & Learning Factories, (iii) Fully immersive and transnational experience involving at least two institutions from different countries, (iv) core technology areas combined with structured training in innovation and entrepreneurship, and (v) cross-sectoral involvement from both academia and industry.

Data Science and AI for Competitive Manufacturing is a combination of manufacturing science and Information and communication technology including the usage and adoption of advanced digital solutions and platforms. During the programme, students will gain new skills in relevant fields including modelling and simulation of production systems, manufacturing engineering, service and system engineering, machine learning and data mining.

A student who graduates from the ME Manufacturing Engineering with “Data Science and AI for Competitive Manufacturing” major shall:

  • have broad knowledge of theories and concepts in information system management, digital monitoring, digital security.

  • be able to implement the gained expertise in data science and AI to create new or improved digital manufacturing systems and services;

  • be able to critically, independently and creatively participate in strategic work to meet manufacturing-related problems and to be able to relate these measures to sustainable social development,

  • be able to think beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries to find innovative solutions to real-world problems and to come up with new ideas applicable to Data science, AI and manufacturing;

  • be able to draw up plans and to make decisions foreseeing future consequences from a scientific, ethical, and societal perspective;

  • be able to turn innovations in the area into feasible and successful business solutions;

  • be able to profitably work in small size teams and contexts by taking into account all relevant elements and showing effective decision-making and leadership abilities.

Stage 1

The ME (Manufacturing Engineering) Degree Programme with Data Science & AI Competitive Manufacturing is a Two-Year 2-Stage 120-Credit Masters Programme. This is offered as a double-degree under the EIT Manufacturing Master School collaborative programme. Students are required to take 60 credits in Stage 1 (Year 1) at UCD as the Entry University with a balanced workload of 30 credits per Trimester. Stage 2 (Year 2) of the Programme will be completed at the University of Trento in Italy as the Exit University. All modules are REQUIRED Core Modules and students will be automatically registered for them. The EITM Summer School will be accomplished centrally with other EITM students in the summer but the credits will be counted in the Spring trimester.

Stage 2

Stage 2 (Year 2) of the ME (Manufacturing Engineering) Degree Programme is undertaken at the University of Trento in Italy (UNITN). Upon successful completion of Stage 2 (Year 2), 60 credits with a composite GPA will be added to the student's record to recognise their performance at UNITN and with regard to formal completion of this double-degree programme.
