In Stage 2, BMus students will deepen and fortify their knowledge in compositional techniques, analytical methods and in Irish Music. In addition, they will be introduced to ethnomusicological issues, deepen their understanding of music history and musicological methods and have a "test run" for the dissertation most of them will have to write in Stage 3. In Stages 3 and 4, students can choose modules from four option areas (Music before 1750, Music since 1750, Ethnomusicology, Seminar Series). The Seminar Series introduces students to ongoing research projects of their own lecturers as well as of guest speakers. The Dissertation is a minor research project, while students can alternatively present a Recital (diploma standard) of 30 minutes duration.
Stage 4

Students are required to take the New Ideas in Musicology, Dissertation or Recital module plus a further 35 credits of music options in their final stage. At least 3 options should be 10-credit level 3 music modules, and at least 1 options must be chosen from the list of performance modules. To fill remaining credits, students may take other music modules including performance modules and they can also take modules outside of Music.
