This programme offers a unique opportunity for immersion in two of the world's major legal cultures: the common law and the civil law. After four years of study, you will obtain two law degrees, one in Irish law and one in French law. You receive a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from UCD, and a French Law degree, the Maîtrise en Droit, from either the Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) or the Université Toulouse 1 Capitole. The Maîtrise en Droit is considered to be a master's level course.

The BCL/Maîtrise is an intensive programme aimed at highly motivated and ambitious students. Graduates of the programme will have acquired an exceptional range of legal and linguistic skills.

About this Course

First & Second Year
You will take the essential Irish law subjects required for recognition by the professional bodies, including:

  • Constitutional Law
  • Contract Law
  • Tort
  • EU Law
  • Criminal Law

You will also be introduced to French Constitutional Law and French Civil Law (taught through French), and will be given an opportunity for advanced French language training.

Third & Fourth Year
Third and fourth years are spent in one of our two partner universities. The subjects studied are determined by those institutions.
  • Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) (see www.u-paris2.fr/)
  • Université Toulouse 1 Capitole (see www.univ-tlse1.fr/)

The intensive nature of this programme means you will not have time to take extra modules as part of UCD Horizons. For the same reason you are not required to take General Introduction to Legal Studies, and Law & Legislation.

You will attend lectures and tutorials, in addition to engaging in study and preparatory work.

Below is a list of all modules offered for this degree in the current academic year. Click on the module to discover what you will learn in the module, how you will learn and assessment feedback profile amongst other information.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
