History prepares students for a wide range of careers including journalism, business, law, the civil service, diplomacy, NGOs, social media, and teaching.

You can continue to study History at Postgraduate or PhD level, or use your History degree to progress to a wide range of prestigious postgraduate conversion courses.

Stage 1

Students take eight stage 1 core modules (50 credits), and select one 5-credit stage 1 option module.

It is recommended that students spread their credit workload evenly between Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.

Stage 2

Students take three stage 2 core modules (25 credits) and should select a minimum of five 5-credit stage 2 option modules.

Stage 3

Students who remain in UCD for the full year should take 50 option credits at level 3 plus 10 elective credits. Students who take up a trimester-long exchange or internship for one trimester and are in UCD for the other trimester only should take 20 option credits at level 3. Extra option modules from your programme can be taken in place of your electives if you wish.

Stage 4

Students take 30 credits of core modules, including the 20-credit dissertation module.

In addition, students choose one 10-credit module in each trimester.

Up to two 5-credit modules may be chosen from the elective block if desired.
