The BA Humanities is an innovative, interdisciplinary four-year programme that combines multiple subjects to provide coherence and depth to student learning within nine carefully structured pathways. Taught by expert academics in the Arts and Humanities, the BA Humanities programme offers both intensive training in particular disciplines and unique skill sets that are developed by bringing together subjects that and relate closely to each other. Students will gain essential life and employment skills, including critical, analytical and creative thinking, and expert communications, while learning how to be adaptable and flexible in preparation for employment in a dynamic work environment.

Students on the Classics, Art History and Archaeology pathway will benefit from the inter-disciplinary study of the visual arts, archaeology, and material culture from prehistory and antiquity to the present day. In Classics, you will use literary and historical analysis along with the visual and material evidence to reconstruct the lost worlds of the Greek and Roman past; in Art History, you will learn the skills of visual analysis and learn how to read images in their social and cultural context; and in Archaeology, you will learn the principles and practices of archaeological approaches to material culture and landscapes in order to explore past human societies. Graduates will have skills in critical thinking and interdisciplinary analysis which will prepare them for careers in the cultural and heritage sector, education, archives, media, journalism, public service, museums and art galleries, research, and a wide range of private sector employment opportunities.

This programme provides students with an in-depth grounding in three cognate subject areas: Classics, Art History, and Archaeology. Students who take this course will benefit from the inter-disciplinary study of the visual arts, archaeology, and material culture from antiquity to the present day. The first three years of the programme focus on training and building expertise and skills in the three disciplinary areas. In Art History students will learn the skills of visual analysis and learn how to read images in their social and cultural context, in Archaeology they will move from the ‘big stories’ to methods and material culture analysis, and in Classics they will use literary and historical analysis along with the visual and material evidence to reconstruct the lost worlds of the Greek and Roman past. It is expected that on completion of the third year students will have accumulated 45 credits in each subject area. Interdisciplinarity will be emphasized in Stage 3, with a core seminar on a key theme (e.g. text and image, memory, environment and culture) and a summer fieldwork project in Glendalough. The focus of the final year will be the dissertation.

1 - Use skills of inquiry, research, critical thinking, and problem solving to pursue and evaluate knowledge.
2 - Evaluate ideas, challenge assumptions and develop creative solutions to problems for example by the independent pursuit of knowledge and making connections between different disciplinary approaches and methods.
3 - Communication, collaboration, and leadership: demonstrate effective communication, digital expertise, collaboration and leadership skills to convert decisions and commitments into action.
4 - Understand the ethical implications of ideas, communications, and actions including demonstrated awareness of the historical and cultural construction of knowledge systems and traditions
5 - Understand the relevance and contribution of the Humanities and the Social Sciences to contemporary society and cultural practice including an ability to articulate the links between past and present as well as the influence of the past on shaping community and societal structures and beliefs.
6 - Articulate advocacy of human, social and cultural values with an awareness of the value of life-long learning, an understanding of how to learn, and an appreciation of the complexity of ideas, societies, cultures, artefacts, and language, both visual and textual.

Stage 1

Students are pre-registered to 8 core modules (40 credits). Students should then choose either (a) both modules from Options 1 and one module from Options 2 or (b) one module from Options 1 and two modules from Options 2. Students should also choose 1 elective.
It is recommended that students spread their credit workload evenly between Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.

Stage 2

Students register to 7 core modules and then choose any 3 modules from the available options.

Stage 3

Students who remain in UCD for the full year in stage 3 should pick at least 10 credits from Art History, at least 10 credits from Archaeology, at least 10 credits from Classics, and a maximum of 10 credits from the "Extra-Subject Options" list. Any students on a trimester exchange or internship in stage 3 should choose an even spread of modules from all three subjects for one trimester.

Below is a list of all modules offered for this degree in the current academic year. Click on the module to discover what you will learn in the module, how you will learn and assessment feedback profile amongst other information.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
