About this Course

This programme is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled personnel in secondary schools to deliver, at Junior Cycle (Short Course) and Transition Year level, Chinese language courses. It also anticipates the preparatory needs of those who will undertake later study, as syllabus development up to Leaving Certificate level unfolds in Ireland. The programme serves the specific needs of recognised secondary school teachers, or academic equivalent, who already have mastered pedagogy and who wish to develop or enhance their competence in teaching Chinese language, as part of their career development.

We value and encourage our students to be actively engaged in language-related cultural studies to underpin their professional engagement in teaching Chinese language. We therefore place significant value on autonomous learning to underpin their ongoing and deeper study of Chinese language.

We aim to provide a learning environment that encourages autonomous learning and collaboration and utilization of modern technology to enhance Chinese teaching and learning. Our students are provided with small group teaching, distant learning, one-on-one teaching support and online materials.

1 - Demonstrate proficiency in Chinese to intermediate level (HSK 3).
2 - Develop confidence in teaching Chinese for speaking and reading to basic level (YCT 1-2).
3 - Design language workshops and teaching plans appropriate to the teaching of students at Transitions Year and Short Course Chinese.
4 - Adapt modern technology to teaching and learning of Chinese.
5 - Develop strong autonomous learning skills to equip students for professional development, career development and/or further study of Chinese to a higher qualified level.
6 - Appreciate the relationship between the language and its cultural context
