Classroom Based Learning

The UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems is based in the Health Science Building on the Belfield campus. An important aspect of any programme at the School is the theoretical based knowledge which provides the foundation for advancing a students understanding of the biological, social and behavioural sciences within the nursing and midwifery disciplines. Students will develop these skills in state of the art lecture theatres, meeting rooms, computer labs and a dedicated Health Science Library.

Clinical Skills & Simulation

In SNMHS we use simulation and clinical skills training to support and enhance the development of basic and more advanced technical and non technical skills at all levels for nurses and midwives.

Simulation Based Education (SBE) and clinical skills promotes advanced inquiry, problem solving and decision making leading to a deeper conceptual understanding which allows students to practice in a safe environment. Experiential learning, deliberate practice and the ability to provide feedback are the primary advantages of SBE.

We use manikins, task trainers, simulated patients (actors) and student role play in our teaching. Our manikin are full body simulators ranging from low fidelity to high fidelity. They come in a variety of types including babies, children, and adults. Task trainers provide students with the opportunity to practice and improve motor skills performance.

Simulated patients and student role play is used to practice the development of critical non-technical skills such as team work, communication and behavioural skills that underpin safe clinical practice. The teaching, learning and assessment of SBE and clinical skills is a critical component of nursing and midwifery education.

Practice Placement Allocations Office

Practice Placement is a fundamental part of a student's learning experience in becoming a qualified nurse or midwife. During your studies, you will participate in practice placements in a variety of healthcare settings. You will gain real-world experience and hone skills like communication, critical thinking and decision making. For further information about Practice Placements, check out our Practice Placement Allocations Office page.

The School has had a long and fruitful association with our partner hospitals and works actively to maintain and strengthen these partnerships. Learning within these sites is both directed and self-directed, and students are supported in identifying and optimising their learning experiences and reflecting on them as an integral part of their learning experience.

"My time in the UCD BSc Midwifery programme has taught me more than I could have imagined. I have had the privilege of being involved in the most important moments in people's lives, supporting them during their pregnancy, labour, and postnatal period, in placements all around Ireland. I have met the most amazing women, from all walks of life, going through a vulnerable period and intrusting in me to help make it a great experience, it is truly a gift. UCD’s facilities are unlike any others, with simulation labs to sharpen our midwifery skills, amazing lecturers to improve our education, and incredible sports amenities and societies to integrate ourselves into the UCD community. I am grateful to be a part of such a great programme."
