This degree subject focuses on the social, cultural, legal, governance and justice dimensions of sustainability. Progressing towards sustainability to ensure a healthy planet and human wellbeing requires significant societal adaptation and behavioural change.

About This Course

BSc Sustainability - Society & Governance is one of the degree subjects in the Sustainability course.

Students study a common First Year for the three Sustainability degree subjects and at the end of First Year, choose their degree subject. Degree subject choice is subject to the number of places available and is not guaranteed. The list below outlines sample modules for a BSc Sustainability - Society & Governance student at UCD. There will be opportunities to apply for exchange programmes and an international field trip is a core component of the Third Year experience.

Graduates from this degree subject will have highly developed analytical skills, methodological and research competency and the ability to deal with complex problems requiring interdisciplinary solutions. These attributes are in significant demand across the public and private sectors, including corporate businesses, private consultancy firms, banks, educational institutions, civil society organisations, state agencies, and transnational organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme, the European Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Teagasc. Graduates will be well equipped to undertake further study at master’s and doctoral levels in a range of disciplinary areas.

Students have the opportunity to complete a Professional Placement module which provides an opportunity to undertake a placement in industry (6-10 weeks) in the summer following Third Year. Students have completed internships in RPS Group, KPMG, Wind Energy Ireland and Environmental Consultants. Placements are secured on a competitive basis and are subject to change.

“I chose to study Sustainability at UCD because of the degree's unique interdisciplinary approach, encompassing the environmental, social, and economic pillars of sustainability into one cohesive programme. What particularly attracted me was the programme’s alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, offering a framework to tackle real-world sustainability challenges through practical, evidence-based solutions. Some of the standout moments during my time in UCD came from beyond the lecture theatre. I was able to undertake field trips to Copenhagen and Brussels, including a visit to the European Parliament. During Third Year, I undertook an internship with An Post, which gave me the opportunity to put theory into practice, supporting the transition of their logistics operations to HVO fuel and green energy. Additionally, I spent a semester abroad at UNSW Sydney, which further broadened my perspective, exploring how sustainability is studied and implemented in a very different part of the world. Since graduating, I have joined ERM as an Environmental Consultant, working on renewable energy projects and sustainable finance initiatives benchmarked against international performance standards, a truly exciting start to my career all made possible by choosing this course.”
