Curricular information is subject to change.

UCD offers the widest choice of Science programmes in Ireland, providing degree courses in Biological, Biomolecular and Biomedical, Chemical, Earth and Environmental, Mathematical, Physical and Computer Sciences. We recognise that the transition from school to university may be challenging and all our staff are committed to supporting and assisting students during their university life.

You have chosen one of seven streams within DN200 depending on your scientific interests. By choosing a stream, you can tailor your study plan to focus on a particular area or sample more widely to explore your interests.

The list below provides information on the modules taken by students in Stages 1 and Stage 2 of DN200. Information on the modules required for degrees in Stages 3 and 4 can be found in the list of undergraduate Science degrees.

Additional information on programme pathways can be found on the College of Science website. Information for prospective students is available from the MyUCD website.

Science Stage 1,2,3,4

UCD Science degree programmes set international standards in quality, diversity, flexibility and depth and nurture creativity, innovation and critical thinking.  As well as an in-depth knowledge of their disciplines, science graduates will have a clear appreciation of career pathways and the skills for success in them, maximising their opportunities and impact.  Classes combine students from diverse backgrounds and countries, bringing together an inspiring range of perspectives and raising global and societal awareness.

1 - Core knowledge across the range of sciences relevant to their subject.
2 - Experience of scientific research and familiarity with its role in the generation of knowledge.
3 - Technical and data analysis skills developed through practical exposure to substantial aspects of their subject.
4 - The ability to critically synthesise and communicate scientific research in written and oral form to a range of audiences.
5 - An appreciation of the context and contribution of their chosen subject within the broader science area and society in general.
6 - Project planning, project management, collaboration and teamwork skills appropriate to a professional environment.
7 - An intellectual, critical, professional and ethical approach to their subject and to their thinking.
8 - Capacity for lifelong learning and problem-solving.
9 - Awareness of relevant career pathways and the skills required to apply successfully for jobs.

Students’ performance will be reviewed at the end of the academic year. Students who fail 50% or more of their registered modules, and who fail to progress to the next stage of their programme, will be identified under the UCD Continuation – Academic progress policy. Students’ performance will continue to be reviewed in subsequent trimesters and students will be invited to meetings with the College of Science office for support and guidance.

Where the rate of progression and performance over two academic years is deemed unacceptable, a case will be submitted to the Governing Board for review. A recommendation for discontinuation may be the outcome of this review.

As Stages 3 and 4 have the most dynamic components of the programme, and the material studied previously may no longer be relevant, a student who has been away from the programme for a significant period should be required to register again to Stage 3. The upper limit for completion of Stages 3 and 4 should be six years if they choose to do 120 credits with 20 in each year.

First year of the Science course is designed to enable you to sample a number of subjects in your chosen area but also includes some core subjects required for all degrees, for example Mathematics. It ensures that you have the foundations in the subjects you require for your degree but it also allows students who have not taken a subject at second level to study it at university. The choices you make in first year will have a bearing on your final degree subject(s). In first year, students have a mixture of lectures and practical classes every day. Typically, lectures take place in the mornings, practicals in the afternoons. In addition to the subject modules you must study as part of your degree, you also take one additional module called an elective, which you may choose from anywhere across the university, including Science.
