Curricular information is subject to change.

If you are interested in studying Statistics with an Arts and Humanities or Social Science subject, then this degree could be for you.

Statistics is the science of transforming data into knowledge and understanding, providing a principled approach to making data-informed decisions. Statistical methods enable us to gain insights from data, and with the advent of powerful computing technology, these methods have become widely used in many sectors. With society and the economy routinely producing vast amounts of data, the demand for data analytics skills is higher than ever.

This programme is aimed at students on the BA programme particularly those studying one of the Social Science subjects or Mathematical Studies. By combining those subjects with Statistics to obtain a joint honours BA degree students will enhance their employability. In the 21st century data has become the key tool employed by companies, organisations and individuals to make informed decisions. The Social Sciences worldwide have become increasingly quantitative in nature and that trend is accelerating. Combining a degree in one of the social science subjects with statistics provides students with all of the skills required to excel in their future careers as social scientists. Obtaining the quantitative expertise provided by studying Statistics will set students apart and make them more employable. For those who wish to study statistics or mathematics as subjects in their own right, a joint honours BA in Statistics and Mathematical Studies provides a perfect combination.

1 - Demonstrate an indepth understanding of statistics
2 - Use the language of logic to reason correctly and make deductions
3 - Approach problems in an analytical, precise and rigorous way
4 - Apply statistical reasoning and techniques to formulate and solve problems
5 - Model real world problems in a statistical framework
6 - Confidently analyze and draw information from large quantities of data
7 - Analyze and interpret data, find patterns and draw conclusions
8 - Use the power of modern technology to augment statistical problem solving
9 - Work independently and as part of a team
10 - Give oral presentations of technical statistical material at a level appropriate for the audience

Students may apply to study abroad at international partner universities in Year 3 of the Social Sciences programme.

With a degree in statistics, you will acquire the necessary skills to unlock insights from complex data, and steer crucial decisions across a diverse range of sectors. Employers in these industries are actively seeking professionals with advanced statistical data analytics skills and reasoning. As a statistician, you will be highly valued across a broad spectrum of fields, and perform societal research that contributes to understanding economic and social change, informing public policymaking. You will have the opportunity to build a career in industries such as government, economic analysis, finance, marketing, or education.

A degree in statistics also opens doors to graduate studies in both taught and research programmes.

Stage 2

Stage 2 Statistics students must take all four core modules.
In addition, they need to pass MST10030 if they have not already completed it. MST20070 must be taken in either Stage 2 or Stage 3.

Stage 3

Students must register to three Stage 3 core modules and select two of the listed Stage 3 option modules. MST20070 must be taken in at Stage 2 or Stage 3.

Stage 4

Students must register to three Stage 4 core modules and select two of the listed Stage 4 option modules. MST20070 must be taken in at Stage 2 or Stage 4

Below is a list of all modules offered for this degree in the current academic year. Click on the module to discover what you will learn in the module, how you will learn and assessment feedback profile amongst other information.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
