About This Course

From the moment a woman becomes pregnant, it’s the start of a journey leading to one of life’s greatest miracles: the birth of a baby. The term “midwife” means “with woman”. Midwifery is a wonderful profession and if you are interested in working with women, their newborn babies and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, then midwifery is the career choice for you. The focus and philosophy of midwifery in UCD is the promotion of women-centred care.

The initial focus is on the foundational knowledge and skills required for midwifery practice. Each year, these will be developed and strengthened through theory and practice. In your final year, you will also focus on professional issues.

Modules include:

First Year

Professionalism in Nursing and Midwifery Practice • Anatomy and Physiology • Preparation for Practice Placement • Introduction to Population Health • Fundamental Knowledge and Skills of Midwifery Practice 1 & 2

Second Year

Advances in Population Health • Microbiology for Healthcare • Pharmacology and Medication Management • Advancing Nursing and Midwifery Through Evidence Based Practice • Responsive Midwifery Practice • High Risk Conditions • Neonatal Considerations and Specialist Midwifery Care

Third Year

Advanced Midwifery: Critical Care and Obstetric Emergencies • Maternal and Neonatal Complexities of Labour and Birth • Midwifery Leadership and Society • Ethics, Law, and Health Policy for Nursing / Midwifery Practice • Co-morbidities in Midwifery Practice

Fourth Year

Leadership and Innovation within Health Systems • Consolidating Professional and Interprofessional Practice

Assessment is through a combination of end-of-trimester exams and continuous assessment, including assessment of performance on practice placements.

Professional Clinical Experience

Practice Placements, which form a significant part of the course, are completed across a number of sites. You will attend practice placements in the internationally renowned National Maternity Hospital (NMH) and a linked maternity unit e.g. in Wexford General, Regional Hospital Mullingar and St Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny. All students must attend at least two clinical sites during their course to enable them to achieve the necessary clinical learning outcomes. Internship practice placements will be completed in NMH and linked maternity hospitals.

Breakdown of Practice Placement and Theory

Successful completion of your degree entitles you to register as a Registered Midwife (RM)‡ with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). On registration, numerous career opportunities are available to you in both hospital and community settings in Ireland and abroad, including Europe, Australia and New Zealand. You can also pursue further specialist qualifications through graduate diplomas, and Masters and PhD degrees.

Registration in Ireland does not automatically provide a licence to practise abroad.

My time in the UCD BSc Midwifery programme has taught me more than I could have imagined. I have had the privilege of being involved in the most important moments in people's lives, supporting them during their pregnancy, labour, and postnatal period, in placements all around Ireland. I have met the most amazing women, from all walks of life, going through a vulnerable period and intrusting in me to help make it a great experience, it is truly a gift.
