This programme is aimed at students who want to learn Latin either as beginners or at a more advanced level. Students have the opportunity to read the works of such authors as Virgil, Livy, and Ovid in the original language. Latin language and literature are not only fascinating in themselves, but are also basic to an understanding of later European culture. The programme stresses the relationship between language study and understanding ancient Roman civilization as a whole, so that even the beginners’ course comprises not only language exercises but also reading adapted Latin texts which deal with interesting moral and historical issues. Students have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of ancient Rome by taking selected modules from the Greek and Roman Civilization programme as options. The study of a language which is no longer spoken is especially valuable in developing skills of logical analysis and reasoning. Latin is taught in small classes, requiring intensive student participation at every stage. Assessment is by in-class tests, essays, and examinations.
