Curricular information is subject to change.

This programme is aimed at students who want to learn ancient Greek either as beginners or at a more advanced level. Students have the opportunity to read the works of such authors as Homer, Herodotus, and Plato in the original language. Greek language and literature are not only fascinating in themselves, but are also basic to an understanding of later European culture. The programme stresses the relationship between language study and understanding ancient Greek civilization as a whole, so that even the beginners’ course comprises not only language exercises but also reading adapted Greek texts which deal with interesting moral and historical issues. Students have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of ancient Greece by taking selected modules from the Greek and Roman Civilization programme as options. The study of a language which is no longer spoken is especially valuable in developing skills of logical analysis and reasoning. Greek is taught in small classes, requiring intensive student participation at every stage. Assessment is mostly by in-class tests which offer students continuous feedback on their progress.

- read unadapted Greek prose and verse texts
- give analytical and well-informed answers to advanced questions about Greek grammar and syntax
- translate Greek prose and verse texts into idiomatic English with confidence and accuracy
- analyse and interpret important examples of literary, historical, and philosophical Greek texts
- demonstrate a critical understanding of diverse academic viewpoints on the interpretation and evaluation of Greek texts
- analyse the values and achievements of ancient Greece, and articulate their relevance to later historical periods and cultures
- work independently, manage their own workload, take responsibility for submitting assignments on time, and understand the importance of good timekeeping
- deliver oral presentations clearly and confidently, and engage constructively in group discussions
