This module provides an introduction to the practical and applied aspects of veterinary anatomy through small group dissection projects aimed at relating anatomical structures to a clinical, surgical, or biological problem. It will also cover the anatomy of the structures encompassing the walls and contents of the thoracic cavity of farm animal species as well as the dog and cat. Key areas covered include: the structure and function of the thoracic skeleton, thoracic musculature, thoracic cavity and pleura, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, gastro- intestinal tract within the thoracic cavity, innervation of the thoracic cavity and the lymphatic system. It also includes an introduction to: the clinical examination of the thoracic cavity; thoracic radiography and thoracic surgery.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: (1) Describe the overall topographical, comparative and functional anatomy of the thorax in the domestic veterinary species inclduing dog and cat(2) Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the subdivisions, organs, blood supply, innervation and lymph drainage within the thoracic cavity. (3) Describe the topographical relationships of all organs and structures comprising this region of the body. (4) Relate the above to the basic radiographic anatomy, histology and live anatomy of the region through an ability to accurately describe and identify all organs and structures and define their relationships. (5) Work as part of a team to research, retrieve, critically analyse, and apply anatomical information.
