This course is an introduction to some of the statistical methods used for analyzing data and draw conclusions, in application to medical, biological and scientific data. Core concepts will be presented using practical data examples, focusing on applications and critical evaluation.
Main topics covered:
- Introduction: What is Statistics? - Types of data - Tools for describing data.
- Probability and distributions: Basics - Binomial distribution - Normal distribution - Sampling distributions.
- Analysis of continuous data: Basics of inference - Inference for the mean - Comparing two samples.
- Analysis of categorical data: Inference for proportions - Analysis and inference of frequency tables.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should have acquired the following skills:
- Use Binomial and Normal distributions
- Perform inference on numerical continuous data and compare two populations
- Perform inference on proportions related to categorical data
- Being able to analyze and perform inference on categorical data in the form of frequency tables
- Have a general understanding of all the statistical methods introduced and being able to use them according to the context and purpose of analysis
