As part of the work leading to the master's qualification students complete a dissertation of approximately 10,000 words (max. 15,000 words). The capstone research project may involve field research or desk research, depending on the topic, the student's interests, and the guidance of the supervisor.

Prior to commencing work on the capstone, students attend a number of intensive workshops, in which the emphasis is on developing and refining their ideas for the research proposal/project.

Each student must submit a research proposal for ethical approval to the School Masters Ethics Committee.

Learning Outcomes:

Students learn to undertake a piece of individual research, to follow UCD's research ethical standards, to relate their work to literature in the topic area, and to show competence in the analysis and discussion of data.
