This module serves to provide students with a critical understanding of the role of psychology in optimising performance in sport. In doing so, students will be presented with a balance of academic theory, current issues and applied practices in the field of sport psychology. Specifically, applied psychological issues faced by sports performers will be explored in conjunction with performance enhancement techniques. Theoretical concepts related to the development, acquisition and characteristics of motor skills will also be reviewed. Alongside these traditional areas of applied sport psychology, there will be focus on psychological wellbeing, and the psychosocial factors that can influence athlete wellness.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological demands in sport and how psychological theory and skills can be used to manage those demands through students’ own practical experiences and interactions with other students and lecturers.
2. Critically evaluate the scientific literature with respect to current issues in sport psychology.
3. Critically reflect and communicate how the principles of sport psychology might influence their coaching practice.
4. Draw on a knowledge base of assessment methods, psychological skills, and techniques to design a theory-based psychological intervention to enhance performance within individuals and teams.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback will be provided to students in a number of ways during this module. Technology will be used in-class for students to quickly gauge their understanding of psychological constructs. Students will be provided with feedback from the module coordinator on each stage of the case study enabling students to use that feedback to inform the next stages of the case study. Finally, students will be provided with summative feedback post submission of the final component of the case study.
