This module is designed to facilitate work placement experience in sports management for students. This module will encourage and enable students to assume greater responsibility for the planning and evaluation of their own learning. The internship is for a minimum period of 6 weeks in the Spring and/or Summer trimester. During this period students are expected to conform to the normal working hours of the host company and complete a minimum of 200 hours work experience.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

(i) improve awareness of the broader environment of sport;
(ii) develop new and employment-related skills and gain an understanding of how a sports organisation/business is managed;
(iii) work independently and as part of a team within the parameters of the agreed work plan and time-scale;
(iv) understand the link between academic development and workplace requirements;
(v) make a reasoned assessment of critical incidents and personal and academic capabilities.

Indicative Module Content:

Setting SMART work objectives
Developing a CV, job hunting and interview skills
Assessing own skills
Critically evaluating incidents in the workplace
Evaluating knowledge transfer in the workplace and making links with prior academic learning
A minimum of 6 weeks of a work placement and a minimum of 200 hours of work

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Prior to placement a number of face to face lecturers are given with an overview of the sports work placement, the setting SMART work objectives, writing a CV, making job applications and developing interview skills.
The work placement takes place in the Spring and/or Summer trimesters for a period of 6 weeks commencing in the Spring trimester and finishing by the end of the Summer trimester. Students are not permitted to complete their placement outside of these dates without permission from the Module Co-ordinator. During this period students are expected to work within the agreed working hours of the host company and complete a minimum of 200 hours work experience.
