Curricular information is subject to change.

This module primarily involves student-directed learning with the aim of developing student knowledge and practical scanning competence across a range of MR examination types.

It is a co-requisite module for Technology and Practice of MRI I and Technology and Practice of MRI II, and as such, it provides the opportunity for students to:
1) demonstrate knowledge of the principles, applications and MR appearances in normality and disease relative to a ranged of body MRI examinations
2) develop their practical MR scanning skills across a range of MR examination types involving the CNS, musculoskeletal, body and vascular systems.

Teaching methods include self-directed learning supplemented by: 1) practical demonstration of and participation in MR scanning for a range of MR examination types within a clinical setting, and 2) reflection on clinical practice and competence development through specific entries in each student's individual MyProgress e-portfolio.

Completion of the specified minimum number of MR clinical placement hours for this module is compulsory. Where a hospital has been contracted by the University to provide a student with MR clinical placement hours, additional clinical time, beyond that contracted for, to facilitate resit and/or repeat of clinically-based assessments may not necessarily be obtainable, which may affect academic progression.

The assessment strategy comprises an MR image-based written examination.
Depending on the total number of failed module credits being carried, a student’s registration to this final module of the MSc MRI programme may be deferred until the next academic year, providing they have, in the interim, passed all failed module assessment components.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge Outcomes:
Throughout this module, students will further develop and consolidate the knowledge, professional skills and personal attributes relevant to their future professional practice in MRI in a manner that is largely self-directed. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
K1) Explain the underlying physical principles and clinical applications of MRI relative to the evaluation of haemorrhage and diffusion-weighted imaging.
K2) Evaluate the contribution of MRI to overall patient management relative to the presenting clinical history and the potential role of other imaging modalities for the following MR examination types: paediatric MRI, MR angiography, MR enterography, MR colonography, rectal MRI, foetal MRI and MRI in pregnancy.
For the above MR examination types:
K3) Critically evaluate the choice of and modifications to MR scanning protocols and pulse sequence parameters in the context of diverse patient presentations, clinical indications and image quality optimisation.
K4) Synthesise current theories in MR imaging and integrate these into decision-making and problem-solving activities.
K5) Critically evaluate MR images based on signal intensity characteristics associated with normal anatomy and with disease.

Professional Skills & Competence Outcomes:
The module will facilitate the further development of professional clinical skills required to enable the student to progress towards the achievement of practical clinical competence in MRI. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
S1) Apply the knowledge and practical skills gained to competently perform MR examinations of the CNS, head & neck, musculoskeletal system, abdomen, pelvis and vascular system with minimal supervision from senior clinical colleagues.
S2) Identify challenges relating to patient care, MR safety and MR scanning practice and suggest/ apply appropriate response strategies.

Attitudes & Quality / Personal Development Outcomes:
The module aims to encourage the student’s development as an effective member of the healthcare team. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
A1) Negotiate appropriate clinical experience to facilitate achievement of the module learning outcomes.
A2) Reflect on and critically appraise individual knowledge, technical and professional performance relative to best practice.

Indicative Module Content:

This module addresses a range of topics that inform and direct clinical MR scanning practice across a range of anatomical regions. These include: the principles, applications and MR appearances in normality and disease relative to: haemorrhage, diffusion-weighted imaging, paediatric MRI, MR angiography, MR enterography, rectal MRI, foetal MRI and MRI in pregnancy.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered through self-directed, supervised clinical learning in an MRI department and self-directed review of lecture material. Participation in online tutorials will also be required.
Compulsory engagement with the online MyProgress e-portfolio is required, which provides a framework for students to log clinical MR scanning hours competed, descriptions of cases scanned together with reflections on competency development over the course of the Trimester.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

To undertake this clinical practice-based module and meet the specified learning outcomes, students are normally required to:

1) have provided written evidence of an agreement with their clinical MRI department to provide practical experience in MRI for a minimum of 400 hours over the duration of the Summer Trimester;

2) have studied the following four 10-credit modules over the course of the two previous Trimesters: Technology of MR I (RDGY 40520), Practice of MRI I (RDGY 40530), Technology of MRI II (RDGY 40540) and Practice of MRI II (RDGY 40550);

3) have successfully completed the formative (non-graded) practical clinical assessment within their MRI department during the Spring Trimester.
