In this module students are expected to undertake a body of research activity culminating in the submission of a minor thesis, the presentation of thesis material to external and/or internal examiners, and the preparation of an edited manuscript for submission in a peer review journal. This dissertation module enables the student to build on their capacity for independent work, inquiry and problem solving, under the guidance of their individual thesis supervisor. On completion of this module candidates will demonstrate:
- Their familiarity with study design, selection of appropriate methodologies and samples and power calculation;
- An ability to develop a research proposal and ethics applications as required;
- Proficient data collection, collation, analysis and interpretation skills;
- An ability to prepare and present a completed minor thesis, including an appropriate literature critique of the completed research.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate research competencies through the research process; including the planning, review and evaluation of research protocols and projects.
2. Establish and demonstrate competence in utilisation of and ability to comment on appropriate previous research and current information/literature and data.
3. Interpret statistical techniques appropriate to particular research projects.
4. Demonstrate a capacity for independent work, inquiry and problem solving.
5. Demonstrate an ability to analyse, criticise and make sound judgements within the presentation of the thesis material exercising appropriate academic and ethical decisions.
6. Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer review journal.
