This module offers participants the opportunity to develop clinical and academic knowledge of ultrasound and its role in the management of early pregnancy. It aims to equip participants with a level of competence in ultrasound scanning that will enable them to understand the indications for ultrasound examinations, perform scans safely and competently, report on scan findings in the clinical context and know when to refer patients for a more detailed assessment. Technology of ultrasound is incorporated into this clinical module and topics covered will ensure the student is competent in selecting appropriate equipment parameters to optimise image acquisition and record optimal representative images. This module is designed to provide both theoretical and practical training, with a significant emphasis on clinical experience. Students registered for this module are offered the opportunity to study the following aspects of early pregnancy ultrasound: the fundamental principles of ultrasound examinations in the management of early pregnancy; ultrasound diagnosis of normal early pregnancy; ultrasound diagnosis of early embyronic demise; ultrasound diagnosis of a suspected ectopic pregnancy. Completion of this module awards the student the professional certificate in early pregnancy ultrasound. In order to undertake this module participants must be actively scanning in an obstetric ultrasound department and have a named clinical supervisor. This involves arranging a clinical placement and providing evidence of an agreement to spend a minimum of 80 hours practicing clinical early pregnancy ultrasound while undertaking this module.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: demonstrate high level clinical skills in the performance of early pregnancy ultrasound; apply current theories of ultrasound, basic sciences and communication to their clinical reasoning; justify the contribution of ultrasound to the overall management of the patient; self evaluate their performance in the clinical environment; discuss the social and ethical implications of early pregnancy ultrasound; communicate written information in an effective manner; demonstrate good IT skills

Indicative Module Content:

The fundamental principles of ultrasound examinations in the management of early pregnancy;
ultrasound diagnosis of normal early pregnancy;
ultrasound diagnosis of multiple pregnancy and chorionicity in the first trimester;
ultrasound diagnosis of early embyronic demise;
ultrasound diagnosis of a suspected ectopic pregnancy;
ultrasound diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease;
basic ultrasound technology;
image aquisition.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Students must provide written evidence of an agreement with an obstetric ultrasound department to provide clinical ultrasound experience and supervision throughout this module. This agreement must be signed by the named clinical assessor

Applicants should be obstetric and gynaecological trainees at Senior House Officer, Registrar or SPR level, consultants specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, with approval to practice in Ireland; midwives registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or the UKCC, who provide antenatal care; or Radiographers with the approval to practice Radiography in Ireland or Northern Ireland, who currently practice ultrasound.

Other professionals are considered on individual merit (eg general nurses or general practitioners), but must be actively scanning in order to undertake modules in the Graduate Certificate Programme.

Learning Recommendations:

It is recommended that trainees spend as much time as possible performing clinical ultrasound examinations while undertaking ultrasound modules. Trainees will maximise their potential to develop high level clinical and academic skills in ultrasound by exceeding the minimum clinical hours stated for each module. Applicants should be computer literate and have continuous internet access for the duration of this programme
