Curricular information is subject to change.

This module facilitates the integration of theory and practice in clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the abdomen, pelvis and vascular system in pursuit of clinical competence. Consideration is also given to the particular requirements for MR imaging of paediatric patients. For these MR examination types, students are encouraged to build on existing knowledge and investigate and analyse issues relating to: typical clinical indications, MR scanning technique and examination protocols, together with normal and abnormal MR image appearances. Students will also develop their knowledge of cross-sectional MR anatomy and MR image appraisal. Overall, the module aims to cultivate higher level professional and reflective skills.

Completion of the specified minimum number of MR clinical placement hours for this module is compulsory.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge Outcomes:
Throughout this module students will develop knowledge, professional skills and personal attributes relevant to your professional practice as an MR radiographer.
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1) Evaluate the contribution of MRI to overall patient management relative to the presenting clinical history and relative to other imaging modalities.
2) Critically evaluate the choice of and modifications to MR scanning protocols and sequence parameters in the context of diverse patient presentations, clinical indications and image quality optimisation.
3) Synthesise current theories in MR imaging and integrate these into decision-making and problem-solving activities.
4) Critically evaluate MR images of the abdomen, pelvis and vascular system in the context of patterns associated with normal anatomy and with disease.
5) Justify the protocol changes necessary when imaging paediatric patients.

Professional Skills & Competence Outcomes:
The module will facilitate further development of professional practice skills. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1) Perform MR examinations of the abdomen, pelvis and vascular system with decreasing levels of clinical supervision.
2) Source and analyse relevant peer-reviewed literature to provide a critical evidence base for MR scanning practice.
3) Communicate ideas and concepts logically and coherently within written and oral presentations.
4) Develop a platform for sharing knowledge with clinical colleagues.
Attitudes & Quality / Personal Development Outcomes:
The module aims to encourage the student's development as an effective member of the healthcare team. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1) Reflect on personal knowledge, performance and on professional issues.
2) Identify approaches to develop personal and professional expertise.
3) Develop the skills necessary to communicate information to clinical colleagues.

Indicative Module Content:

The module will facilitate the student in developing and applying knowledge associated with MR scanning protocols, techniques and clinical applications for MR examinations of the abdomen, pelvis and vascular system.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be taught in the form of face to face lectures, case studies to initiate problem solving skills, small group tutorials and online formative quizzes.
Compulsory engagement with online e-portfolio which forms a basis for logging of hours and descriptions of cases scanned throughout the semester. This is a compulsory part of the course and must be submitted by the assigned deadline at the end of the trimester.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

To undertake this module and meet the specified learning outcomes, students are normally required to have studied the following two 10-credit modules over the course of the previous Trimester: Technology of MR I (RDGY 40520) and Practice of MRI I (RDGY 40530).
