RDGY30310 Clinical Practice of Radiography 3-2

Academic Year 2024/2025

Third year students will follow a clinical rotation to specific areas related to taught syllabus. By the end of third year, each student will be expected to work competently in all general areas of the Imaging Department, as well as mobile work, under distant supervision. In addition, students should have developed adequate skills to make a useful contribution to clinical practice in angiography and paediatric work. Students will also get an opportunity to visit Ultrasound, and Computed Tomography. Clinical staff will monitor each students progress, assisting with specific difficulties, and helping the individual develop confidence in each area of competency.
Full attendance at clinical placement is compulsary and any missed clinical placement time must be rectified as per CORU requirements.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:
- Competently perform a range of general radiographic examinations and adapt radiographic techniques appropriately for various patient presentations under supervision.
- Select, justify and optimise appropriate projections and techniques for a range of commonly encountered clinical indications and patient presentations ensuring appropriate radiation protective measures are applied.
- Apply a logical system to the assessment of radiographic images for the x-ray examinations, fluoroscopy examinations and theatre imaging taught in Practice of Radiography 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- Demonstration professionalism, effective teamwork and communication in all interactions with patients and clinical staff as per clinical policy
-Demonstrate personal ability to care appropriately for all patients as per the clinical policy.
- Critically reflect on their performance and experiences in clinical practice.
-Practise in accordance with current legislation applicable to the work of their profession

Learning Requirements:

Candidates must normally achieve at least 80% attendance at clinical placements, and must successfully complete relevant specified learning activities before taking the end of module assessment.

Candidates not achieving the requisite attendance stated above must, before completing the module and its assessments, undertake such clinical placement as is considered necessary to address the deficit.
Candidates who do not complete the module placements within the prescribed clinical placement period will be scheduled for Clinical Recovery Placements to facilitate students in the completion of the clinical placement requirements.

The Clinical Recovery Placements will be scheduled in agreement with supervising Practice Tutors within the clinical environment, which may involve clinical placement during the summer months. Progression to the next stage is not normally allowed if the clinical modules identified in each stage of the programme are not completed prior to the start of the next academic session.

Students who fail to attend coursework plenary sessions may receive a grade penalty for the associated coursework component, and may be required to undertake an individual discussion session with the module coordinator

Compulsory Requirements: Garda Vetting certification, Manual handling certification, Children first certification, Hand Hygiene certification and Basic Life Support certification. Students must comply with Vaccinations policy and fully comply with programme requirements..
Students who fail to attend or fail to achieve a pass in either Basic Life Support or Manual Handling will have to re-take these components and reach a pass before entering clinical (this may incur a cost to the student). all pre-requisites must be successfully completed prior to entering clinical.

Students who fail to attend or fail to achieve a pass in either Basic Life Support or Manual Handling will have to re-take these components and reach a pass before entering Clinical Placement.
