Professional Knowledge and Skills
Students will learn to evaluate the benefit of individual imaging procedures depending on the patient's presentation and diagnostic inquiry. On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Understand and describe hospital procedures and imaging techniques for a range of fluoroscopic radiology examinations relating to GI, urinary, and orthopaedic procedures.
- Become familiar with the pharmacological and physiological principles of preparations administered in diagnostic imaging for a range of examinations
- Understand DXA positioning and scanning techniques and understand image analysis and results
- Have a basic knowledge of the standard projections used in mammography and an awareness of the additional views, and when they are used. They will be expected to understand the differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic presentations and to understand the specific needs of patients attending for mammography.
- Understand and describe patient preparation, procedural techniques, appropriate contrast media use, equipment, radiation safety, working as a team, patient care considerations, and image appraisal for procedures covered in the module. They should also be able to discuss the role of the radiographer for these imaging procedures.
- Differentiate accidental and non-accidental paediatric injury patterns; Outline a spectrum of congenital developmental disorders affecting neonates and children and non-congenital pathologies that present primarily in childhood; Distinguish paediatric radiography techniques that vary from techniques applied generally in adult examinations.

The module aims to encourage students’ development as effective members of the healthcare team. On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Explore how radiographers work as effective and responsible members of the healthcare team concerning imaging patients.
- Discuss how to provide an appropriate and professional level of care to all patients in the imaging department.
