This module is core to BSc Radiography students in Stage 1. This module provides the knowledge that underpins the performance of radiographic examinations for upper limb and lower limb, and introduces students to some core concepts in the production and delivery of a radiographic service. The overall aim of this module is to provide a sound knowledge base from which clinical skills may be fostered and developed to cultivate a proficient, critical and questioning approach to the practice of radiography.
In this module, the core knowledge that a radiographer must have when performing a variety of radiographic examinations will be addressed through a combination of on-line and in-person lectures, tutorials, practical demonstrations, clinical skills labs, completion of on-line self study units and image viewing tutorials.
The clinical skills lab activity is scheduled in the X-ray suite and VR suites.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
- Describe how to correctly undertake examinations of upper limb and lower limb using the correct terminology.
- Be able to describe the key justification criteria for each radiographic examination.
- Identify and explain appropriate projections for specific clinical indications for imaging.
- Explain the reasons for specific patient positioning, X-ray beam alignment and exposure factors.
- Explain the technical, patient and pathological factors influencing preparation and choice of technique for projections of the upper limb and lower limb.
- Describe the correct methods for image appraisal criteria inclusive of addressing image quality and methods to improve such of a variety of upper limb and lower limb radiographs regarding anatomy, radiographic positioning and key pathology.
- Appraise the technical quality of radiographic images, including clinical acceptability and potential for improvement.
- Locate normal and some abnormal anatomical appearances in relevant radiographs with accuracy and reasonable consistency.
- Describe the principles of Risk management, identify incidents, near misses & working safely as it relates to the radiology department.

Professional Skills:
On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
- Use relevant peer-reviewed referral criteria for upper and lower limb and chest radiographic examinations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the patient examination implications of specific clinical scenarios.
- Locate normal and some abnormal anatomical appearances in relevant radiographs with accuracy and reasonable consistency.
- Demonstrate an understanding of radiographic image appraisal inclusive of ways of improving diagnostic quality.
- Demonstrate appropriate practical methods of radiation protection for skeletal radiography and an understanding of the processes of justification and optimisation.
- Start to interact with patients via role play in the clinical skills lab.

Personal / Professional Development:
- Students will be required to take responsibility for their own learning; independently using a series of reference text books and journal articles in order to carry out further reading on the subject matter of the module; use Brightspace and other web resources during autonomous learning.
- Students will be required to engage with Virtual Reality Radiography study units, online lectures and tutorials throughout the duration of module and gain 2D virtual training skills.
- Attendance at 3D virtual reality radiography training and X-ray Skills labs in UCD is required and students will gain pre-clinical equipment and patient positioning skills.
- Students will develop their communication skills and learn to work within a professional team to complete a task associated with the module content.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Blended teaching approach utilised in this module:

A combination of in-person lectures and tutorials, on-line lectures and tutorials delivered over zoom, and lab based practicals in the form of demonstrations and skills labs in the x-ray suite and 3D virtual reality (3DVR) labs. During these labs students will have an opportunity to work in small groups to practice the theory learnt in both the xray suite and the 3DVR labs.

Assessment takes the form of a midterm MCQ quiz, a groupwork assignment on the critique of a radiograph, submission of a series of 2DVR examinations and an end of term written examination.

A series of online study units are available which includes videos of radiographic practice, access to the 2D VR software for student to practice their techniques, completion of radiography tasks in a 2D virtual learning environment, recommended reading / learning material and additional resources

- Students will receive individual feedback on final graded 2D VR assignments given using the rubrics & any additional grader comments on brightspace. - Individual group feedback will be given using the rubrics & any additional grader comments on brightspace following the groupwork assignment. - Group feedback will be provided to the entire class following the midterm mcq examination. - Students will also be provided verbal feedback on their performance during lab based practicals and 3D VR sessions by the demonstrators.
