This module will occur in Autumn and Spring Trimesters and will comprise twenty seminars of 1.5 hours duration each. Student learning will be directed towards the theoretical underpinnings of Systemic Therapy Practice. The focus will be on the development of Systemic, Social Constructionist, Narrative and Dialogic theories and their application in practice. Topics covered will include the Evaluation and Critique of Theory, Developing an understanding of Social Constructionism, Post-Milan Developments (Collaborative Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Dialogic Approaches), Social and Cultural issues in Systemic Practice, Systemic Couples Therapy, and Systemic Therapy responses to organic health problems.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will have a knowledge and understanding of: (1) a broad, up to date range of literature in Systemic Theory and Practice. (2) an ability to evaluate theory critically. (3) an ability to describe differences and similarities between approaches in Systemic Therapy including relevant theories of change. (4) how to identify and develop appropriate responses to organic problems that impact on emotional interpersonal system difficulties.
