This module will explore political change in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) through a focus on the interactions of local, regional and international actors. The module will begin with an exploration of the emergence of modern states and the state system of the MENA region. Key themes in the postcolonial politics of the region will be examined, typically including topics such as political economy, conflict, the role of the security apparatus, and the impact of external actors. The module will conclude with a discussion of the recent Arab uprisings and their implications for analysis of the politics of the region.
