ABOUT THIS MODULE
The module “Climate Targets and Their Implementation in the European Regions” is an intercultural module for students at University College Dublin (UCD) and the University of Zurich (UZH). The module is developed and delivered through Una Europa.

This online-only module is taught by Dr Sebastian Lamm. Dr Lamm is a lecturer at the University of Zurich and the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. Previously, he has served as a substitute professor for the field of International Political Economy at the Free University of Berlin. Dr Lamm is also Rector of the Stiftsschule Einsiedeln (Switzerland).

Dr Stefan Müller is the official module coordinator and contact person for UCD students.

PURPOSE AND CONTENT
Climate change and environmental degradation are existential threats to Europe and the world. With the European Green Deal, the EU aims to transition to a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy, but in which way? This online module offers a practical, intercultural exchange between students at the University of Zurich and University College Dublin. By using various optional topics, regional solutions are analysed, compared, and discussed.

Students will examine and compare climate targets in various European countries, including Ireland and Switzerland, with a focus on key policy areas such as renewable energy, carbon emissions reduction, and sustainable agriculture. The module provides comprehensive knowledge of the European Union Green Deal and detailed insights into past and current practical implementation using regional examples. Critical reading and discussion of academic literature will further enhance understanding.

This intercultural module leverages the online environment to facilitate peer-to-peer learning and exchange. Approaches to teaching and learning include active and task-based learning, intercultural group work and discussions, intercultural debates in class, and problem-based learning. Through collaborative projects and discussions, module participants will gain insights into the diverse strategies and policies employed across different nations, fostering a comprehensive understanding of European climate policies and their implementation.
