PLAN40590 Practice Based Project

Academic Year 2024/2025

In conjunction with the Planning Practice internship, students will produce a piece of written work in relation to their application of academic knowledge to a particular workplace-based case study. It is intended that there will be an interlinkage between the academic knowledge that has been acquired to date on the MRUP programme, its application to a specific practice-based case study, and once applied, a further subsequent reflection on the linkages between the academic and practice-based work. The goal is to identify how academic knowledge can enhance planning practice as well as how practice can inform and contribute to academic knowledge.

Students will engage with their practice based mentor and their academic supervisor in relation to the practice based project, however, the student should be proactive in identifying a topic for the practice based project. This project could relate to any element of the work being carried out in practice: housing, transport, regeneration, environment, or sustainability among others. The student should research the project/topic in the context of practice and should also carry out research on the topic using an academic lens, utilising previous learning from the MRUP and through reviewing the wider relevant literature and policy.
While the internship placement component of the Planning Practice Internship is grade neutral the Practice Based Project is graded and contributes to the student’s final GPA.
