This module is designed to provide an introduction to tissue culture techniques with an emphasis on mammalian cell physiology. The primary aim of this module is to give students hands-on laboratory experience in cell culture and the various techniques that are associated with maintaining aseptic cell cultures.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Describe the basic principles of aseptic techniques as they apply to the maintenance of mammalian cell/tissue cultures. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Primary vs cell line culture.
i. Proliferative capacity, differentiation, transformation, senescence.

b. Adherent vs suspended cell culture.

c. Types of culture media and nutrient requirement.

d. Substrate requirements for adherent cells.

e. Relevance of cell confluency.

f. Assessing cell number, viability, and growth rates.

g. Preventing microbial infection.

h. Detecting microbial infection.

2. Demonstrate laboratory competence in performing tasks relating to Learning Outcome 1.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves approximately ten weeks of laboratory-based practical activity.
Students will work closely with a research active supervisor.
Teaching will involve laboratory work; active/task-based learning; critical writing; reflective learning; enquiry & problem-based learning.
