Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1. Describe the basic principles of aseptic techniques as they apply to the maintenance of mammalian cell/tissue cultures. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Primary vs cell line culture.
i. Proliferative capacity, differentiation, transformation, senescence.
b. Adherent vs suspended cell culture.
c. Types of culture media and nutrient requirement.
d. Substrate requirements for adherent cells.
e. Relevance of cell confluency.
f. Assessing cell number, viability, and growth rates.
g. Preventing microbial infection.
h. Detecting microbial infection.
2. Demonstrate laboratory competence in performing tasks relating to Learning Outcome 1.
