PHYS40060 Physiology Research Project

Academic Year 2024/2025

This module serves as the research component of the BSc programme in Physiology and therefore is intended only for Students in Stage 4 of the Science degree programme. Students will be expected to undertake a laboratory based research project under the direct supervision of an academic member of staff. Although the students will be guided in order to master the specialised techniques involved in modern research, they are expected to work independently in the latter stages of the project.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Execute a research study with the scientific method.
2. Write a research thesis concerning the aims, methods and principal findings of the study.
3. Defend the methods and statistical analysis employed.
4. Present the rationale and results of their study to an audience.
5. Enunciate the limitations of their study.
6. Place the study in the context of other similar studies.
7. Demonstrate a critical analysis of alternative methods.
8. Discuss the implications of their findings.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves approximately ten weeks of laboratory-based research activity.
Students will work closely with a research active supervisor.
Teaching will involve active/task-based learning; critical writing; reflective learning; laboratory work; enquiry & problem-based learning; and, student presentations.
