This module is designed to integrate and advance students’ knowledge relating to musculoskeletal injury and the specialist area of sports physiotherapy practice. It will advance the previous knowledge and use of evidence practice in sports/function specific exercise, soft tissue and joint treatment in relation to different injury stages. Throughout the module, we will highlight the issue of interdisciplinarity, scope of practice, and how different stakeholders in sport and exercise medicine integrate to provide adequate and appropriate services. Topics covered include: concussion, acute injury management, working with a team, taping, sports specific rehabilitation, sports psychology, returning to sport post injury and complex MSK conditions.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a good knowledge of the role of the physiotherapist in sports.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of current evidence for management of sport related disorders of the spine and periphery, justifying the role of physiotherapy with reference to the literature.
3. Be able to develop, design and evaluate a progressive sports/function specific exercise program respecting the different stages of inflammation and healing.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of assessment and management of foot and ankle mechanics.
5. Demonstrate awareness of access and inclusion to sport and sport rehabilitation services for all populations, vulnerable communities, and differently abled athletes and individuals.
