4 weeks of Practice Education Placement

Indicative Module Description:
This module builds on the learning outcomes achieved in earlier stages of the programme and prepares the student for autonomous practice as a CORU registered Physiotherapist upon graduation.
This module comprises small group teaching in the clinical education placement setting and direct clinical patient management. Students will work in the Health Service in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, primary, community and continuing care, under the direction of a practice educator and/or practice tutor. Practice may include face to face patient contact as well as telehealth interventions.
Students will have an opportunity to further develop, practice and refine clinical assessment and treatment skills learned in previous modules, continuing to progress the student’s attainment of the Standards of Proficiency.

Indicative Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module students should:
1. Achieve the competencies set out in the Physiotherapy Clinical Placement Assessment Form, Level 2
2. Demonstrate detailed or advanced theoretical knowledge and understanding in the clinical area through demonstration of advanced clinical reasoning skills and be able to identify and assess the service users’ need
3. Apply their knowledge and problem-solving abilities as part of the multidisciplinary team, in new clinical environments and using previous experience. With the development of advanced clinical reasoning skills, students demonstrate the ability to formulate judgements with incomplete or limited information to implement evidence-based treatment in practice.
4. Be able to work in partnership with service users, their carers and other professionals. Be confident in screening, delegation, and appropriate onward referral as appropriate for each service user.
5. Manage documentation and communication of the patient information clearly and in an unambiguous manner that adheres to the legal requirements of the profession within a multidisciplinary setting.
6. Engage in reflection on the wider professional issues, social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application and evaluation of practice.
7. Demonstrate the learning skills necessary to develop professionally in a manner that is largely self-directed and autonomous.
8. Recognise the need for effective self-management of workload and resources and be able to practice autonomously

Indicative Module Content:

Clinical practice on placement varies depending on the specialties available on site.
Clinical practice assessment is determined by the Clinical Placement Assessment Form under the 3 headings - Assessment & Management, Professionalism and Documentation / Communication.
The portfolio includes the reflective assignment, the evidence based clinical reasoning form & unplanned learning.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Throughout the practice placement teaching and learning occurs on the clinical site with face-to-face patient interactions and inter-professional interactions with Physiotherapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Teaching may occur one to one or in groups. Evidence informed case-based discussions, tutorials, peer learning and presentations are often used as methods of teaching and learning.
The Physiotherapy Learning Portfolio provides the opportunity for students to submit written reflection on their placement and the evidence based clinical reasoning form affords students the opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving approach to clinical decision making through the application of evidence-based practice on a specific patient encounter.
