Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, obesity and diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative conditions are the leading causes of premature mortality worldwide. They are a result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioural factors. In addition, people are living longer. By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over. The emergence of several complex health states commonly called geriatric syndromes are often the consequence of multiple underlying factors and include frailty, urinary incontinence, falls, and delirium. In this module, students will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills to effectively contribute towards the prevention and management of NCDs across the lifespan.
Physiotherapy and dietetic students, collaborating through the internal fusion of disciplinary knowledge, methods, expectations and boundaries, will focus on lifestyle-related behaviours which are core to much of the ill health observed in contemporary society. Materials covered address principles and models of health promotion (HP), HP planning in community settings, behavioural change theories and approaches, nutrition for physiotherapists and clinical exercise prescription. Conceptualising and designing interdisciplinary health promotion initiatives (week 1-8) for delivery on campus (during UCD Healthy Eating & Active Living week) (week 10) are core to this module.
