Evidence Based Practitioners combine their clinical expertise with best research evidence to present management options to their patients/clients. Evidence Based Practice PHTY20270 teaches healthcare students how to do effective literature searching and how to appraise the quality of the papers retrieved. It is relevant to all healthcare students, including Physiotherapy, Health & Performance Science, Medicine, Nursing, Radiography/Diagnostic Imaging and Veterinary Medicine. Teaching is face-to-face but supplemented by videos that go through systematic literature searching step-by-step. In-course assessment is open-book and submission deadline is approximately week 5. This assessment requires students to focus a clinical question of their choice and submit a PubMed search strategy based on the focused clinical question. Weeks 5-12 of term cover critical appraisal of various study designs, including analysis of Results sections of papers. Final assessment is at end-of-trimester and is closed-book short-answer-questions, based on previously unseen published papers. Students will be required to critically appraise the methodology of the papers and interpret their Results. Previous students have reported in online feedback that the module has a positive knock-on effect on other modules, which require them to be adept at literature searching and appraisal.

On completion of this module, you should be able to:

1. Formulate a focused clinical question and systematically retrieve best available evidence.

2. Appraise Methodology of diagnostic accuracy studies, Randomised Controlled Trials, Systematic Reviews & Meta-analyses.

3. Understand statistics used in healthcare research eg Test Sensitivity/ Specificity, Relative Risk, Odds Ratio.
