The dissertation constitutes the final stage of the MSc programme in Coaching Science in Sport, and accounts for a third of the students’ final grade. The module presents an opportunity for students to conduct applied research, demonstrate creativity and critical thinking, as well as to develop and defend their ideas. The projects typically focus on current coaching and/or exercise science issues in an Irish and/or international context. To successfully complete this research project, students will be required to analyse and synthesise the relevant academic literature, to develop a conceptual framework, to produce a formal research design, to perform primary data collection and analysis or secondary data analysis and synthesis, and to report and present the findings. Working within the research process, students will develop skills in the analysis of complex material, gain a working knowledge of methodologies for data collection and analysis and develop skills in effectively planning and managing a substantial scientific investigation.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1) Appreciate the ethical issues in scientific research, including those arising in relation to the negotiation of research access, dissemination and implementation of research findings.
2) Undertake a critical literature review, identifying a conceptual model to underpin the work, develop a research design, select appropriate data collection method(s) and carry out a competent and rigorous analysis of the data to synthesise new knowledge and insights in the research context.
3) Display deeper knowledge and skills in a specific subject or context that is the topic of the independent investigation.
4) Apply knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving skills and techniques to a relevant area.
5) Manage the research process over a prolonged period of time involving both theoretical and practical issues.
6) Produce a written document, and defend it by answering questions, in order to demonstrate clarity of thinking and logical argument in making practical conclusions and recommendations.
