This module introduces you to the principles of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), risk management, health and safety management, and to the major hazards in modern workplaces. It introduces the legislative framework that underpins OSH practice, and includes an overview of the legal system. It provides examples of best practice in health and safety risk management. It (re)introduces you to the principles of learning at University level and enables you to enhance your existing learning and study skills.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module the student should be able:
-To identify and explain the major sources of OSH legislation and the Irish legal system, including compensation rules.
-To explain the differences between criminal and civil law, statute law and common law.
-To discuss the major components of key Irish health and safety legislation.
-To discuss the legal duties of major stakeholders.
-To explain the components of a safety management system and advise on the development of a safety management system for a low-risk business.
-To describe and explain the principles of risk management in the context of OSH.
-To apply the concepts of hazard identification, risk assessment, and controls to work situations.
-To recognise ergonomic, mechanical, chemical, and psychosocial hazards in the Irish workplace setting and make recommendations to mitigate the associated
risks.
- To demonstrate ability to engage with learning materials, plan to include study into a busy schedule, and to produce a professional report on an OSH-related topic.

Indicative Module Content:

This module will (re)introduce you to studying at third level, and introduce you to the Irish legal system and OSH law as well as the broad principles of risk management and how they can be applied to OSH management in practice. It will also introduce you to the key hazard groups that affect every workplace: mechanical hazards, ergonomic hazards, chemical hazards and psycho-social hazards.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The key teaching and learning approaches used in this module include:
a) during the trimester you will engage with online lectures, carry out directed reading, and work-based tasks, as well as engaging with peers and tutors through an online group discussion forum and during assessment-related online tutorials during the trimester on Thursday evenings;
b) at a tutorial following the last online lecture in the module you will engage in problem-based learning, case-based learning, and group-work.
You will learn how to use a critical writing approach when preparing your assignments, and you will be encouraged to apply your learning to your work situation.
Tutorial activities normally take place at the end of the module on a single day during which you must attend UCD (subject to national Irish public health requirements prevailing at the time). Your tutor will have planned various activities to facilitate your consolidating your learning from the module.
This module is part of a Blended Learning Certificate Programme; your schedule will specify when in-person attendance is required.

All OSH modules utilise Harvard Referencing for all student assessment. Please access the Harvard Referencing Guidelines produced by the UCD Library on the UCD Library Website.

As per the UCD Plagiarism Policy, the Module Coordinator has determined that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Software (e.g. Chat GPT) is not permitted for use in the completion of assessment in this OSH module. If a student does use such software and it is detected, it will be considered as plagiarism. Only if the Module Coordinator explicitly specifies on assessment instructions that AI is permitted is there an exception to AI being used.

The use of software to support writing development (e.g. Grammarly) is permitted and is not considered plagiarism. If students need writing support they should contact the UCD Writing Skills Centre.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Your grader will complete a rubric to indicate areas that you completed well and areas that could be improved in each of your assignments. You will receive feedback on your assignment in the form of written annotations on the assessment in Brightspace, and an overarching summary feedback comment. Tutors will give overarching assignment advice based on class-level assignment feedback during tutorials
