This module will introduce students to the dominant paradigms and theories of leadership. Collectivistic approaches to leadership and the evidence for their effectiveness will be presented. The key concept of collective leadership and how it compares and contrasts with individual leadership styles will be explored, with particular emphasis on the benefits and limitations of CL in the context of multidisciplinary teams. The Collective Leadership Compass will be introduced as a guide to self-assessing and monitoring one’s leadership approach. An awareness of some key cultural aspects of health systems that are critical to leading collectively will be developed through the exploration of power, trust, collaboration, responsibility and accountability in a team context. The module then facilitates students to apply the theory in practice. Students will be introduced to the Collective Leadership and Safety Cultures research programme being conducted by the Health Systems team and will have an opportunity to implement key components of the Collective Leadership material with their own teams and share the learning from this. This activity will also form a key component of the assessment for the module. The final part of the module will focus on measurement and impact assessment. The module is particularly relevant to team leaders/managers who are interested in improving the performance of their team, whilst developing their own leadership skills.

• Knowledge of collectivistic leadership approaches and the evidence in support of collective leadership in the healthcare sector, including the benefits at patient, team and organisational level
• An understanding of the complexity of healthcare teams and the critical factors that influence team performance
• Better understanding of own ability to practice collective leadership and identified strengths and areas for development
• Improved knowledge and skills in leading a team collectively and a greater awareness of the strengths of one’s own team.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The content will be delivered through a mix of class-based lectures, class discussions, group work on case studies, fieldwork (where students apply the learning with their own work-based teams and record the outputs), online webinars and discussions and reading materials and workbooks.

The assessments are designed to develop students leadership skills, encourage collaborative working and promote individual reflection and improvement.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will be provided feedback on the fieldwork as they progress through the module and within 2 weeks of submission. Feedback on assignment will be provided within one month of submission at end of module.
