Indicative Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, the participant will be able to:
• Deliver safe care to children in the perioperative environment, integrating knowledge and evidence based practice while adhering to the Professional Nursing frameworks
• Provide and maintain a safe environment for the management of children who require the use of specialist equipment in the perioperative environment
• Deliver safe nursing care to children requiring anaesthesia and recovery
• Demonstrate effective risk management skills and the principles of infection control and aseptic technique in perioperative care.
• Utilise effective communication strategies with children, families and all members of the multidisciplinary team
• Demonstrate safe management of a child requiring emergency surgery

Indicative Module Content:

Safe environment for the management of children who require the use of specialist equipment in the perioperative environment
Assessment and safe nursing care to children requiring anaesthesia and recovery

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

The variety of teaching and learning strategies used in the programme are based on adult learning principles and are learner-centered. In the classroom setting these include online lectures, clinical skills workshops, discussions, simulations, flipped classroom activities and reflection. Learners are supported to apply their theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in the clinical setting, with supervision and support from the programme coordinator, clinical nurse facilitators and clinical staff. Feedback and feedforward strategies will be used on an ongoing basis in the clinical setting to assist students to reach their full potential. This will be done in a collaborative way with the student being assisted to identify specific learning outcomes and given guidance on how to achieve them on a day to day basis.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations

Learning Requirements:

Module Dependencies:
• Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland
• Deemed suitable for this programme by the Clinical Nurse Manager/Clinical Nurse Facilitator
• Employed in the perioperative department, CHI at Crumlin, Tallaght or Temple Street. Successful completion of individual orientation/induction .

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback and feedforward strategies will be used on an ongoing basis in the clinical setting to assist students to reach their full potential. This will be done in a collaborative way with the student being assisted to identify specific learning outcomes and given guidance on how to achieve them on a day to day basis. The learner will receive their written assignment results via written/email communication or via Brightspace, with their grade and feedback.
