Indicative Module Description
This module is designed to prepare students for critical care nursing in the High Dependency Unit. Focusing on the specialist theoretical knowledge, clinical practice skills and professional attributes necessary for critical care nursing to provide nursing care to Level 2 critically ill patients. Students will advance their patient assessment skills, clinical decision-making, and critical thinking skills to implement effective plans of care for the high dependency patient. The module also emphasizes ongoing professional development for critical care nurses, highlighting patient-centred care, safety, accountability, and effective communication with the healthcare team, patients, and families.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module the student will:
1. Further develop and extend their specialist theoretical knowledge and specialist clinical practice skills related to a broad range of health alterations that occur in patients requiring Level 2 Critical Care.
2. Advance their ability to conduct a systematic and focused nursing assessment of the High Dependency patient and develop a patient specific nursing plan to meet their needs effectively incorporating best available evidence.
3. Anticipate and recognise acute changes in the condition of the patient by analysing patient data and respond appropriately in a timely manner in the delivery of holistic nursing care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patient care is appropriate, consistent, and effective.
4. Advance their clinical decision making and critical thinking abilities by utilisation of a structured framework that is underpinned by best available evidence and practice policies and guidelines.
5. Further develop their professional responsibility and accountability in the nursing care of the High Dependency patient utilising the principles of effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, patients and their families, patient safety, quality of care and patient advocacy.

Learning Requirements:

Registered General Nurse with minimum 6 months recent clinical practice experience.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours clinical experience within the
High Dependency Unit per month for the duration of the module (24 weeks).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students shall receive feedback on all assessments associated with the Foundations in High Dependency Nursing CPD programme. The purpose of feedback is the promotion of learning for the student. Feedback should be clear, understandable and be structured around goals, criteria and standards. Feedback can be in oral or written form, formal or informal. Students are responsible for engaging with feedback and applying consideration to the feedback given on their work. Feedback shall be given no later than twenty working days after the deadline for assessment submission, except work that is submitted late.
