Indicative Module Description:
The module is designed to provide students with a foundational level of specialist knowledge, skills, and competence for entry into the emergency nursing practice setting. With an emphasis on essential theoretical knowledge that underpins evidence-based care and clinical nursing skills; the module focuses on the nursing care of patients with acute illness and injury in the emergency department practice setting. The module also aims to facilitate the student in their continued professional development with an emphasis on patient-centred care, patient safety, and professional accountability.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, the student will:
1. Discuss the aims and recommendations outlined in the National Emergency Medicine Clinical Strategy Programme in the quest for the provision of safe and quality patient care in Ireland.
2. Evaluate the role of the emergency nurse in caring for patients who present to the emergency department with an acute illness including acute major/minor injuries.
3. Demonstrate appropriate recognition of primary survey components (including identification and management of life or limb threats to the patient by conducting a focused head-to-toe trauma assessment).
4. Appraise the need and importance of completing a secondary survey on a trauma patient.
5. Evaluate the role of teamwork, collaboration, and communication in the efficient and safe clinical processes and practices within the emergency department.

Learning Requirements:

The Emergency Nursing CPD programme is open to nurses registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland in the general division who have achieved a minimum of 6 months of recent post-registration clinical practice. The nurse must be employed in the Emergency Department in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for at least six (6) months before starting the programme. Students are required to complete a minimum of 120 hours of clinical experience within the Emergency Department per month for the duration of the CPD module (24 weeks).
