This aim of this programme is to further develop the learner’s body of knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to provide holistic evidence-based care to children with cardiac conditions and their families in the CHC.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, the learner will be able to:
• Examine common cardiac conditions affecting children.
• Demonstrate an effective admission and discharge of a child to the Children’s Heart Centre.
• Manage the assessment, planning and delivery of nursing care to a child with common cardiac conditions (including altered cardio-respiratory function, altered nutritional requirements and altered thermoregulation).
• Demonstrate effective nursing care of a child undergoing cardiac surgery.
• Communicates effectively with children, families and the multidisciplinary team.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

• Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland
• Deemed suitable for this programme by the Clinical Nurse Manager/Clinical Nurse Education Facilitator
• Employed in the CHC for a minimum of 16 weeks prior to commencing programme
• Successful completion of orientation programme, preceptorship period and completed relevant mandatory training

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. If a learner has any concerns about their grades, requests for additional feedback should be made in writing to the nurse tutor in the CCNE within two weeks of publication of results. Clinical assessments: The purpose of assessment in this programme is to give structured feedback to learners and capture what they have learnt, understood and will apply to their nursing practice.
